Look deeper

Have you ever said hello to someone who replies with 'fine', 'alright' or 'I'm ok'? If so, then did you pursue that conversation any further? Probably not if they are not a good friend as the conversation has now lost your interest or died.

Well next time, maybe look a bit deeper in the persons response. Is this person saying this because they don't know me, they don't want to have a conversation with me, or is it because they feel crap or sad or physically feel they cannot have a conversation with you because they are insecure, feel insignificant or maybe they feel invaluable.

Continue on the conversation! Maybe make them talk. Talk about yourself and raw them out, talk about topics that are neutral or if you are a good friend, then talk about something that interestes them or what you know they would want to talk about. Make them forget about their worries and insecurities. Make them feel valued.

If only just for a second; minute; moment. Make them feel positive and valuable. Make them have a purpose.

.......... or maybe just be there to listen.

I have had a very real personal experience with this want and need. Please take a look at my blog, Heal.For.Life, to read my story and share your thoughts about anything you may have experienced or from other people you know.
I want to irradiate this feeling and the labels that are given to it.

Giggles play centre

I took my nephew to Giggles yesterday due to Lemur Landings having no play area available for under 2's, as they are having refurbishments.

On first impressions, the place was very crowded and quite a small play area for the amount of people there. There were 2 parties going on at the same time, so there was no space in the cafe to sit and have a coffee or something to eat, however we finally managed to grab a table, right around the back of the play area, so quite inconvient, considering the under 2's play area was no where to be seen from our table.

The play area is a good size and accommodates for all ages, with different areas for different ages. However due to the size of the play area, this mean the cafe and surrounding areas to sit are very limited and minimal.

There are no children's shoes allowed in the centre, so shoes are taken at the reception, to be collected on your way out, so much like bowling in that sense. I don't know if this is a good idea or not, as my nephew has only just learnt to walk and so needs his shoes for support when walking.

During our time there, we did order some food, which I must let you know, took at least 45 mins to 1 hour to come, which wasn't great.
When it did come though, it went cold within seconds.
We had cheesy chips and a cheese toastie, which looked presentable with tortilla chips and a side salad, however due to it getting cold so quickly, the cheese became like a glue and when picking up one chip, the whole pile came as well.

I would say, if I went again, I wouldn't steer clear of the toasted and or cheese items and maybe go with a sandwich, wrap or some fish fingers/chicken nuggets.

It may have just been a busy day at the office due to the parties, but overall, a great play area, not so great cafe.

What can I say about Wareham?

Wareham is one of those quaint places that when driving through, you might say to yourself, "oh, what a lovely little place!"

Well next time, why not stop your car and go for a little stroll through the dainty high street and back roads, as it is a peaceful and enjoyable place to have a browse, if only for a few hours, or as a brief stop off on your way to your next destination.

There's charming restaurants and cafes lining the high street, including The Old Granary, perched on the riverbank. There's a weigh and save shop where you can buy your best nuts and a butchers you can buy your Prime meats, as well as shops intermingled between them and a few charity shops as well.

Who doesn't love a charity shop! You never know what you'll find!

Or, why not bring your dog along?
There's lovely, peaceful walks on offer, along the river and there's even a 'Saxon Wall Walk', to add a bit of history to your day.

At Wareham you can learn about medieval fairies, rough justice and also how the Saxon walls protected us from the vikings. This is all for free and is laced all through the area of Wareham!

Why not, after your refreshing walk, stop off one of the cafes or restaurants and have a cream tea or light lunch? There are lots of places to choose from, including the bakers, Williams Bakers, on the corner!

The coffee saloon

We dropped in here for a mid-afternoon snack and a much needed drink, after a charming walk along Wareham's river line. (The river Frome).

Well, we couldn't have picked a better place to try!

The saloon has a quirky and vibrant menu, that is made fresh for you when you order, from toasters to  smoothies, there is a lot to choose from. You can even have orange juice that is freshly made for you and can even watch the process happening, from the squeezing and pressing to the finished product.

I had a tea and it was lovely and soothing. It was hard to pick though, due to the vast selection of fruit teas as well and I couldn't help but notice the wide array of naughty pastries and cakes lining the vintage display crates........  I just had to have a try of one and I am so glad I did as it was one of the best pastries I had ever had, so flaky and buttery! (I'm surprised I didn't go back for another one!

My friend had a coffee and savoury scone that both looked delightful and she said it was absolutely Devine!

At this point, I have to mention the funky decor, as the word 'saloon' describes it perfectly, with wooden panels even nailed to the walls. It vibe has been mingled with an indie flare, with lights draping down over the counters to give that sense of home and comfort, as well as that uniqueness everyone tries to find.

The staff are beyond friendly (and funky) too!

There are also dog biscuits and free tap water for you to help yourself to.

What more could you ask for!

I would definately suggest you try this place out when next in Wareham, Canford Cliffs or down the bottom of Poole Highstreet.

Cheerios are fab!

I know that most people are terrified when it comes to eating cereal and which ones to buy.

How much sugar is in this?
Is it healthy for me?
Do I gain any nutrients from cereal or would I be better with toast and avocado?

Well let me give you a little help.

Cereals are high in sugar and yes are bad for you, but that all depends on which ones you buy.
If you stem towards cereal that are coated in chocolate and sugar, such as frosted cereals, then yes these should only be eaten occasionally when curbing a craving or when you really fancy it.

But not all cereals are bad for you!

What about museli or granola? When choosing, go for the lighter ranges and your can't go wrong. These types of cereals have everything going for them.
There's oats, which slowly release energy throughout the day, saving you until lunch or maybe even further.
There's raisins and dried fruits, depending on which ones you choose, which are great for curbing cravings as they give you that sweet zingy to your tastebuds, giving you that sugar buzz, evidently making you feel happier.
Alpen light, Swiss style is a great one to choose.

Or if you don't like cereals such as museli or granola, then go for something such as cheerios, which are a source of calcium, have 9 vitamins and minerals, are made with 5 whole grains, are high in fibre and DON'T have any artificial colours or flavours.

Now what is guilty about that?

Yes, I know that there are other, healthy options that you've grasped from diet programmes and websites or even articles in magazines, much of which include a lot of toast or yoghurt with something, but when your not fancying any of that and just want some old fashioned, comforting cereal, then you can't go wrong with Cheerios.

Why not find out some other cereals that are healthy for you within a balanced diet and let me know. I'll try them and post them on here to let others know about them too!

Enjoy your bowl of cereal today!

Low cal love snack

If your fancying a cheeky snack that's guilt-free but tasty and serves your sweet tooth, then I would recommend Metcalfe's Skinny Popcorn - Sweet and Salty.

I couldn't have asked for more from a light snack that soothes my cravings and doesn't leave me feeling bloated or guilty in anyway!

Now I am normally one who detested salt and definately goes for that sugary taste, however this popcorn snack gives me everything I wanted. The salt didn't overpower the sugar and I was still able to get that sugary kick out of it.

Low calorie, light and ultimately devilish (........ but angelic!)

Why not have a try?

You can go for the multipack of 6, which I went for, only 78 calories per bag! ........ or why not try your will power and delve into the big share bags, only £1 in Asda at the moment!!!

You've gotta love this one.

Twist on a fish dish

So who likes fish and chips?

Well I can guarantee that most of you have said 'Yes, please!'. Well how about a fish dish that is full of flavour, is filling and is available for under 500 calories.

I have the answer!

Let me introduce you to Thai marinated basa with plenty of veg, perfect with home made sweet potato fries, boiled potatoes or even mash, take your pick!

What you need to do:

- Get a fillet of Basa
- Red Thai curry paste
- Water
- Any veg you fancy
- Sweet potato/ potato

After you've got your ingredients follow these steps;

-In the morning - get a sandwich bag and place your Basa fillet in, along with 1tbsp of red Thai pasta and 3tbsps of water. Close the bag and shake to make sure the fish is coated. Place this into the fridge, ready for dinner.

- At dinner - turn your oven on to preheat. (I use 200*c).
                   - once your oven is heated, take your fish out, place on some tin foil and scrunch around       the edges of the fish, covering and narrower bits, so they don't cook too quickly.
                   - place your fish into the middle of the oven. (I cook for about 15-25 mins, depending on size)
                   - about 10mins before your fish is ready, get a microwave bowl, place a little water (no more than 100mls) into it. Now prep your veg ( I have used broccoli heads, baby sweet corn, runner beans and courgette) and place into the bowl. Cover with cling film and pierce holes into the top.
                   - I cook my veg for 4 mins 20 secs in the microwave at 850 watts so I can time it perfectly, however the timings for the veg will differ with every veg you use, so be careful not to
undercook or overlook your veg!

Your meal is now completed so plate up and enjoy! Make sure to make your accompanying potato choices or any other choices, alongside this recipe........ or if you fancy a light dinner, like I did tonight, then why not just enjoy your wholesome, fresh veg with the luscious fish!

What a fab, light dinner. Give yourself a change and I promise you it's delicious!

Just this minute. Gung hay fat choy!

Sat here watching another replay of the great British bake-off on the food channel, I have been researching more into this fascinating phrase, Gung Hay Fat Choy!

Well do you know what I have found........... a beautiful song that depicts everything special and unique about the Chinese culture and how they celelbrate this coming of the new year.

It's delicate and soothing and everything you could want from a beautifully cultured celebration and shows the great subtlety and well-known notes of Chinese history.

I encourage you to have a listen:

(The publisher has spelled the saying incorectly)

You can also see the lyrics, if you don't fancy hearing it. Just click below:

Quark, who would have thought!

Everyone of my friends have been non-stop talking about this new product, Quark.

Now I don't know about you, but I am always raring to try something new, especially when it comes to new experiences... and food!

However to think of a substitute cream cheese, I have to say, I was quite sceptical as I absolutely LOVE MY CHEESE! I don't think there is one type that I don't like.

Well, anyway, I thought that I would go and buy some of this Quark, why not?
It's low in calories and everyone is talking about it; how could I refuse to try it?

I bought the product; £1.31 from Morrisons.

So I decided to make a risotto with it, as I do love a good risotto that's scrumptious and creamy, who doesn't?

................ it turned out amazing!

I used, alborio rice, quark, stock, chicken and mushrooms; it was thick, creamy, sumptuous and filling!

I couldn't have been more impressed with the finished product. I will definately be buying this again soon...... but this one will last for at least 3 more times.

What a great calorie and money saver that is a great alternative for cream cheese and yoghurts, especially if you are counting those within your New Years diet.

I definately recommend, so go out and get some today!

Post your comments on here for me to see, or even send me your photos, I would love to see your creations.

Chinese New Year is coming soon!

Are you ready yet for this cultural sensation?

Chinese New Year is fast approaching, starting on 28th January 2017.

Following on from my last post, introducing you to this fabulous celebration, I am going to delve further into some traditions that are present during this time and of which have been around for centuries.

The Giving of the Red Envelopes.

Why is it that the Chinese population give out these dainty red envelopes to children, relatives, friends and business associates at their time of year?

What is so special about them?

Well, the giving of the red envelopes, HongBao (as it's called in Mandarin), is an age old tradition.
These red envelopes will always contain money and are given out as a little favour, in celebration of Chinese New Year. They are to wish the recipient good fortune and luck for the coming year.

If you want to read more about the legend of the Red Envelopes, then click on the link below;

http://www.chinahighlights.com/travelguide/festivals/chinese-new-year-legends.htm

So why is it that these envelopes are always red?

Well Red is a very powerful and important colour in the Chinese culture. This is because, to the Chinese, red is always associated with happiness and good fortune. It is symbolic of fire and is said to ward off evil spirits. (Ideas of which have stemmed down the generations from the legend of the dragon, mentioned in my previous post).
Due to this, the Chinese enjoy decorating their houses and building with the colour red and this colour is prodominantly shown as festivals, weddings, birthdays and of course throughout the Chinese New Year.

So the significance of the Red Envelopes, is not e envelope itself, but the colour of it.
Wrapping money in red paper is expected to bestow more happiness and blessing to the receiver.
Therefore, it is impolite to open the red envelope in front of the person who gave it to you.
Those who receive a red envelope are wished another safe and peaceful year.

Traditionally speaking, if you have started earning money, then it is time for you to start giving out red envelopes of your own. However, if you are not married, then you need not give any out.

Your parents and family members, such as grandparents, will continue to give you red envelopes, even when married, as a token of love and blessing for you.

Now, here is a good question. How much do you give?

Well, here's a brief break down of amounts;

- To your elders (e.g. Parents/grandparents) : 500 - 2,000 yuan is given.
- To the younger generation of your family, without an income (including children at school) : 50 - 200 yuan is given
- To your own children : 100 - whatever you deem suitable is given.
- To your employees : 100 - 1,000 yuan is given. (This is always given on the last working day before  New Year).
- To other children you may encounter at New Year : 10 - 20 yuan is prepared to give, when they are seen.

So get saving folks, because this is definately not going to be a cheap holiday for you to celebrate, especially if you have a big family! Just don't forget someone, as they won't be best pleased!

Stay tuned for my Chinese New Year updates and for the day itself ( ...and the 15 others!).

Blast from the Past: Manchester

What a blast from the past!

I went to Manchester a few years back, whilst at Sixth form, studying for my photography A-Levels.
It was love at first sight when I found my photographs of that trips again, such memories.

If you fancy having a look over some photography or want a look at the sights from Manchester, then be my guest....why not take a little peak!

http://awatmanchester.blogspot.co.uk

I would love to hear your feedback on them, however amateurish they may be, there is always room for improvement. Please let me know.

Have fun!

The blank space. Coming freshly from an art exhibition, I have been wondering what 'the Blank Space' gives up. What can we apprieciate and know from this? What is its purpose? Well I want you to think about this and any comments will be welcomed and discussed.

Gym

So I joined the BH live gym today.

I think it was well over time and I kept getting ill from walking to and from work in freezing conditions, especially when it was raining.

So a new week and a new start. Why not!

I had my first gym session today. Signed myself up and took the plunge.

I have to say that I am quite impressed.
I went to Stokewood, Winton, today, but I could have chosen from 5 different places to go to;
- Littledown Centre, Castle Lane, Bournemouth.
- Sir David English, East Way, Bournemouth.
- Stokewood, Winton.
- Pelhams, Kinson.
- BH Live active, Queens Park.

Now I'm no gym expert, but that is a superb selection of centres to choose from and covers a lot of ground. It lets me go to the gym on the way home from work, when meeting up with family and even after a day of shopping or stress. They are fully reachable from many destinations.

Stokewood is a lovely little Centre, quite small, but very comforting and cosy. It had everything I needed to complete a great workout, topped off with a refreshing swim.

I, personally am more attracted to cardiovascular exercise that gets your body moving and your heart rate up. So the cross trainers and running machines present were perfect.
They were top of the range, where you could plug your earphones into the monitor and listen to tv channels, music channels or ESPN. Whatever takes your fancy...... or if your not much of a to lover, then you can watch yourself run/cycle/walk over the French alps, scenic mountains in New Zealand or explore the forest and other scenes available, including the river Seine in Paris. (You can even get a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower. What a treat!)

If your more into your weights then there is plenty on offer, even more so at the other gyms, of what I have found out through word of mouth. I will find out sooner or later though, as I will be trying most of them within the coming weeks.

Stay tuned to see the other centres!

........ oh, and make sure you wipe down your equipment after your perfect workout!

No Snow

So I get up ready for my morning rituals of getting ready to walk to work, when I look out the window and find........ NO SNOW!

Well Bournemouth, you've done it again. When every other place is showing photos of people frolicking in the snow, building snowmans and making snow angels, we Bournemouth inhabitants are sat here reveling by shattered dreams of a snow day.

Well, we can still hope Bournemouthsians, maybe we will get our snow day next week sometime.
But I will leave that for you to answer...

To snow or not to snow?

I don't really know whether to believe the rumours and weather forecasts or not.
Is it really going to snow?

Considering in the last 22 years that I have been alive, we have had nothing more than a few flurries that slowly turn to brownish mush after a few days, I'm quite sceptical about having it.

I would love to know that the possibility of me being snowed in my house tomorrow, not being able to get to work, but instead lazing around the house, making ventures outside every so often to catch a beautiful flurry of snowflakes or to add some eyes to my snowman, is a high percentage. However I do tend to come back to reality far too quickly from a fantasy to believe that there will be anything more than a trace of snow on the floor when I look out of my window tomorrow morning.

Unfortunately that is Bournemouth's reality, compared to that of the beautiful snowy scenes of somewhere like zakopane in Poland. Oh how I would love to wake up and be there, even just to witness another snow lit morning, creeping through my curtains.

We shall soon see tomorrow. Hold your breath in anticipation!

What will await us in the morning?......

Teaching materials: Chinese New Year

Why not try a few arts and crafts out with the children in your class, to celebrate Chinese New Year!

Here are a few examples I've came across whilst browsing and all you need is:

- Paper/card
- Sticks
- Colouring pencils and pens
- Scissors

Or anything else you find in your schools storage cupboards. Why not utilise it all and extend your imagination?

Or try a book perhaps?

Or a bit of art therapy?

Children love a good bit of colouring!

You can even include this topic into literacy lessons.

Get your school and class involved now!

Any others ideas?.. just let me know.

Prep for Chinese New Year!

I wonder how many of you actually think about Chinese New Year?

When is it?
Why do they celebrate it?
Why is it not on the same day every year?
Why is the dragon and the colour red so important?
Well these are all valuable questions...

Like with many different cultures and religions, there are many different beliefs and ancestral stories/ myths that have been passed down through the generations.

But today we are talking about the Chinese New Year and getting prepared for it.

We all know that the Chinese culture has different animals for each different year, well this year is the Rooster!

I definately think at some point you need to dig up the story of the animals representing each year and how they came to be so representational in the first place.
Check this link out for the full story:
https://www.travelchinaguide.com/intro/social_customs/zodiac/story.htm

Chinese New Year is celebrated all around the world but predominantly in china, where thousands upon thousands of people journey to, in order to celebrate there. Whether that be to travel home for family reunions and celebrations or backpacking for an adventure.
I know that Liverpool, for example, is hosting a 3 day celebration for the occasion, so get down there and enjoy what is on offer, it sounds like an amazing time is to be had!

For further information check this website out:
http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/liverpool-host-three-day-chinese-12417860

Birmingham is also in for a treat, even to the extent of road closures!
http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/whats-on/family-kids-news/road-closures-chinese-new-year--8618714

So why is Chinese New Year celebrated and why is it not on the same day each year?

Unlike the Christian New Year, which is based on the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year is based on the lunisolar calendar where the dates indicate both the moon phase and the timely the solar Year.
The lunar month is around 2 days shorter than a solar month. Due to this and in order to catch up with solar calendar, an extra month is added every few years.
This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different day each year.

The celebration usually goes on for about 15 days, starting on New Year's Eve and continuing on into the next month. During this time people will visit home for faily reunions, watch firecracker shows, do shopping, watch traditional Chinese dances and shows through the streets and prepare for the new year.
In China, working people will tend to have up to 7 days holiday to celebrate these festivities.

So why are the dragon and the colour red so important?

The dragon is a mythological beast who has been told to new generations throughout time in China. There is a whole story on how the dragon used to torment villages by eating crops and much more. However one day, the villagers found out that the dragon was afraid of the colour red. The villagers were able to then ward the dragon off by using red within their villages. The dragon in these festivities reminds the Chinese culture of these tales and since this, red has been used throughout China as the colour of luck, to bring luck and fortune into the new year.

To read more about the story, look here:

Or watch the story here:

Why don't you find out your own reasons to celebrate Chinese New Year this year and get involved!

This year it will be 28th January 2017, so make sure not to miss it! Go out and celebrate, or stay in with a feast!

Charity shop crawl

You have just got to love Winton, Dorset.

I have never seen so many charity shops in one place!
I went on a charity shop crawl today, works in much the same way as a bar crawl but minus the drink, whilst adding the excitement at what you'll find within the next shop.

I bought everything from woven baskets to vintage clothes and caddys, not forgetting the tons of books I bought as well. (Who can forget those, I don't have a clue where I'll put them all! Ha, but that's half the fun!)

I think everyone should put aside a day where they can go into charity shops, have a good nose around, buy some vintage items (at bargain prices), then finish with a good size helping of cake and a deluxe hazelnut hot chocolate in Coffee #1 or red velvet cake and mixed berry cooler in the Conto Lounge.

What a fab day, I've already stuck another date in my diary to go again next month, or maybe I'll try Christchurch or somewhere further afield, who knows!........

Storytelling dice

Now I have to tell you about some objects that are absolutely fab at keeping the kids entertained, letting them express themselves and bringing out thier thoughts and imagination; these wonderful objects are called STORYTELLING DICE!

They come in a little cylindrical box, that can be bought from most shops, including Waterstones, Tiger or even online. There are also many different packs that have different images on as well as different themed dice.

What you do is:
1. Roll 1 dice at a time, starting your story with the first dice rolled. Now you have to make sure that whatever happens in your story, you include whether object or animal e.t.c. Is on your dice at the time.
For example, if my first dice rolled a picture of a whale, I would have to make sure that the start of my story encourporated a whale into it.

E.g. I was walking down the road, one frosty day, when all of a sudden a whale fell out of the sky and landed with an almighty thud in my neighbours garden. It broke all of their wooden fences, that trailed around the lawn and even broke their water fountain! ..........

2. You then go on to roll the 2nd dice and so on.

Such a fab game to play, both fun and educational.

Go and get your imagination flowing for the little price of £4! (From Tiger)

2017 in 365 sentences

I have always kept a dairy on and off through out my years, of which I have placed thoughts, feelings asperations, goals and generally anything I want to jot down into it.

Deflation of the ego.

Well I finally finished my degree course, BA Hon's Fine Art, last summer.
I always thought that I wanted to be a teacher, so I studied hard, gained plentiful experience in school, but have unfortunately fell at the last hurdle, twice, when applying for my PGCE Teacher Training year.
I have already sat by and lingered on through 2 years of my life, waiting for this course, so to wait another year is an abominable thought.

Really this post is a help! Please write any suggestions of what you know or think I can become with the use of my degree.

I am fully stuck in limbo and need to ground my feet again.

Just post a comment, any suggestion will help, however minor and I would be very grateful for your input.

Thanks guys, or whoever reading.
